The Chairman, Forest Association of Nigeria and the former Commissioner for Environment, Chief Donatus Ezeogo Aja, has appealed to Ebonyi State Government to recruit forest guards(forest police) to protect the forests or allied forest products in the state.
Ezeogo Ajah made the appeal when the Executive members of the Association in Ebonyi visited the State Commissioner for Environment, Comrade Jonah Egba in his office at Centenary City, Abakaliki.
He condemned totally the indiscriminate felling of trees in some Nigerian forests without a replacing it and called for the ministry's synergy to end the ugly situation in the state.
According to him, the association is one of the most notable professional body in Africa, responsible for conservation of renewable forest resources, sustainable development goals through appropriate forest management strategies and coordinating the activities of those engaged in forestry business and industries.
Responding, the state Commissioner for Environment, Comrade Jonah Egba who appreciated the group for the visit said the ministry would deploy some Environmental Marshals Forest to guide the place while waiting for the recruitment of the forest guards.
Egba noted that the reason why people destroy forest was because they are ignorant of the importance of trees in Environment and general well being of man.
The Commissioner frowned at which people fell trees without replanting it adding that because of the importance he attached to planting, the ministry has established Engr David Nweze Umahi botanical garden and that plans are on going for the ministry to produce Ten thousand(10,000) seedlings of same Achi and Akparata in the next one year.
He explained that Akparata and Achi are becoming extinct in the state and needed to be replanted for future adding that planting new ones would not only benefit the state economically but protect our environment from degrading.
The Head of Department HOD Forestry of the ministry, Mr Cosmos Chima assured that Forest department would continue to ensure that the Environment looks green all the time.
