Ebonyi State Government has mandated all Chairmen of Local Government Areas in State to ensure peaceful co-existence between herders and farmers in their Areas.
The Chairman Ebonyi State Local Government Advisory committee, Mr. Osuji Nwode stated this during the meeting with herders, farmers and the authorities of Abakaliki Local Government Area in the State.
He said there is nothing more than peace and therefore people should maintain peace at all times.
"The essence of this meeting is to stop further destruction of farmlands by the herders and killing of cattles by farmers", he hinted.
The Secretary of the Committee, Barrister Ikeuwa Omebe during his presentation said farmers and herders should live in unity to portray one Nigeria.
"Peace and unity should be the yardstick in daily activities of Fulani herdsmen and farmers and they should live in accordance with the custitution of Nigeria as no one is above the law of the country", he said.
The Chairman herdsmen/farmers Committee in Abakaliki Local Government Area, Mr Kenneth Nwovu thanked the advisory committee for coming to the council for such peace meeting.
The Chairman Myetee Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Ebonyi State Chapter, Mr Ishaq Usman thanked the Ebonyi State Governor, Engineer David Umahi for his relentless efforts to ensure peaceful co-existence between herders and host Communities in the state.
"We are not ready for any trouble, as I talk to you, all our families ranging from our grand parents to the younger ones are all here, therefore peace must be maintained at all costs", he explained.
He promised that henceforth, there will be no night grazing of cattles in the state.
He also said under-age children will not be allowed to graze cattles alone.
It would be recalled that farmers and Herders in the State have been in crisis in some communities, ranging from cattle rustling by host Communities of the Herders to destruction of farmlands and cases of rape by the Fulani herdsmen.
