Nwoba Chika Nwoba writes this poem titled 'Illumination' for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her emergence as the Director General of World Trade Organisation even though her victory is opposed by US.
The poem reads:
ILLUMINATION
(FOR NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA)
What wind can quench a light
on a journey towards illumination;
How dreadful is its might?
From the entrails of our barren earth
A seed sprouts,
Her tendril soaring great heights:
Across hills; across valleys;
Across forests; and to the oceanside.
What wind can quench a light
on a journey towards illumination?
We thought our earth had lost
fertility:
Our river, mighty flow
Our forest, sturdy trees
Our hills, pearly gravels
Our trees, juicy fruits
Our garden, robust seeds
And our orchard, tender stems.
What wind can quench a light
on a journey towards illumination?
Dawn, a girlchild is born
Eventide, she turns a nation,
A world,
A clime,
A community,
A future,
An identity,
And a glory.
What wind can quench a light
on a journey towards illumination?
Now we know our earth is not
dead,
Our river can still flow,
Our forest replete with sturdy trees,
Our hills rife with pearly gravels,
Our garden inundated with flowery plants,
Our trees ladened with fruity burden.
And so,
What wind can quench a light
on a journey towards illumination;
How dreadful is its might?
