In view of International Day for the Girl Child all over the world, the Executive Director of Faith Community Counseling Organization, Mrs. Margaret Nworie has identified rape, female genital mutilation among other things as the greatest challenges facing the girl child in recent times in Nigeria.
She stated this while addressing the Newsmen in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, on the need to safeguard the rights of Women and girls in the society
She called on government at all levels to implement relevant laws that will help to curb the manace against women.
"Uncountable number of rape cases of children between the ages of 9 months to 7 years are recorded on daily bases in various parts of the state as a result of poor parental care and inability of government to domesticate and implement relevant sections of Nigeria constitution to put a stop to this menace posing danger to our society today". She said.
The Executive Director also stated that child trafficking, Gender based violence, poor educational background and early marriage as ill-treatments against women and girl children.
Also speaking during the event, Mrs. Chika Okafor advised women and girl children to always speak out each time their rights are infringed upon.
Similarly, a Human Right Activist and also a student of Ebonyi State University, Southeast Nigeria, Comrade Miss Oluchi Nwite said a girl child is a leader of tomorrow and should be involved in nation building.
