EBSU lecturers condemn cut in salaries

 






Lecturers of Ebonyi State University have gathered en mass to condemn the action of the state government for reducing staff  salaries by twenty percent.


A Professor of Banking and Financing Department, Mr Sunny Nwite stated this while addressing Journalists on how the state government has hijacked the activities of academic and non- academic unions  in the State capital.

He said, lecturers are not against   reducing anything from their Salaries but it should be negotiated.

"It is unacceptable to reduce our salaries without a concrete agreement between the school and Government". He said

" National Academic Staff Union of University ASUU strike is still on and no parent should allow his or her child to come and be roaming in the school". He added.




The ASUU Chairman Ebonyi State Chapter, Dr Ikechukwu Igwenyi thanked the lecturers who organized the meeting.

He assured them that National body of ASUU has started taking action as the national legal Adviser of the Union,  Mr Femi Falana (SAN) has taken the issues surrounding proscription to Court.

"It is only Court that has the right to Proscribe a Union as Labor Matters are on exclusive list in Nigeria Constitution, no Governor has right to do so". He explained.

He urged the state government not to destroy  the University which was rated as one of the best in Nigeria.

Also, Dr Joseph Nkwede said it is not only reduction in salaries but confiscating the union dues which is unlawful.

Similarly, a lecturer in Philosophy Department, Dr Agbo Joseph advised the Lecturers to be courageous noting that if they can survive last five months without salary, that they can always survive the hard time.

A lecturer in the Department of Education foundation, Professor Nick Eke called on government to get capable advisers who will not be dis-informing Government when it comes to matters like this.
