Some stakeholders in educational sector in Ebonyi state have applauded the 19.47 per cent budged for the sector in 2021 appropriation bill of the state, describing education as one of the key to a growing nations and states.
It recalls that state Governor, David Umahi had on December 15 presented appropriation bill of over N122billion for the 2021 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly.
The 2021 budget is tagged "Budget of Stabilisation and Consolidation in a Recession."
"We have budgeted 19.47% of our total budget or N23,913,778,152.08 to Education," the Governor stated.
Dr Onyebuchi Chima, State Commissioner for Education told reporters on Tuesday in Abakaliki that the huge budget was a welcome development as it would go a long way in deepening the already development achieved in the sector.
According to the commissioner, Ebonyi is making tremendous change in the area of education because, since the Governor came on board, several classrooms have been built in schools.
"The infrastructural development is not limited to any community but cut across schools the 13 local government areas. .
"We thank God for the 2021 appropriation bill. We also thank the Governor for given much priority to education of the people.
"The budget captured the slashed made by the Governor on the fees of students in Ebony State University. N20, 000 for indegenes and N10, 000 for the non-indegenes in the school," he said.
Mr Hyacinth Ikpor, Chairman, Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board (EBSUBEB) also commended Governor Umahi and noted that since he came on board, that over 2, 000 classrooms have been built for primary and secondary schools across the state.
"Over 13, 200 seats are ready for distribution to schools. We have 1, 000 computer sets also meant for distribution to schools," Ikpor explained.
Mrs Elizabeth Eze-Anyim, Chairman of Secondary Education Board said the budget meant well to ensure more development in the state's educational system.
On training and retraining of teachers, Eze-Anyim noted that over 4, 000 during the nation and statewide lockdown caused by COVID-19.
