The National Orientation Agency (NOA) Ebonyi state has called for a multi sectoral approach in the fight against cultism and other social vices in the state.
Dr Emma Abah, State Director of the Agency, said that involving parents, schools, traditional leaders, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), among others would go a long way in curbing the increased wave of crime in the state.
Abah who was represented by Assistant Director, Planning, Research and strategy of the Agency, Mr Theophilus Nwokpor made the call on Monday in Abakaliki, during their sensitisation workshop.
The programme was organised by NOA for media organisations, civil society organisations, religious organsations and NGOs on national action against cultism, drug abuse and other socal vices.
Miss Chinelo Okeke, Legal practitioner and Secretary, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Ebonyi Chapter said the judiciary was committed to enhancing prosecution of offenders.
Okeke suggested for amendement of criminal code to capture proper punishment for kidnappers and to tackle the root problems.
She urged parents on good upbringing of their children and educate them on the consequences of cultism and other social vices.
“We need to step the game to enhance the criminal code for offences such as arm robbery and kidnapping.
“The reform should include death by hanging so that offenders can derogate from such activities.
“Also the action will ensure proper investigation of matters to ensure matters in court are prosecuted and judgements made promptly,” Okeke said.
