Member representing Izzi East Constituency in Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Chief Anthony Onyibe Nwegede has organized a unity cup tournament for his Nduogbu Ndueze Community in Izzi LGA of the state.

Interacting with newsmen at Nduogbu Ndueze Vocational School, Chief Nwegede said the football competition was organized by his office as a kick off plan towards his agenda to encourage youths and other community people to actively key into the campaign on the development of sports in the hinterlands.

He described football competition as one of the major sports activities that promote unity among people.

According to him, football festival is a game which brings people together, encouraging them to share love with one language revolving on one word - 'goal.'

He said the football competition is called Nduogbu Unity Cup for the year 2020/2021, noting that, the mini-tournament was not meant only for the village but as a representative of Izzi East Constituency, decided to begin with his village, as he has a greater plan to organize the constituency unity cup tournament in no distant time.

Nwegede observed that with a spirit of sportsmanship, the community crisis would be reduced to the barest minimal, since in his words, when a village is engaged in a football competition to compete with another one, the sense of unity must be welcomed by every group in order to win the trophy.

He noted that his plan towards organising football tournament for his constituency would cut across all genders and ages, advising his people to be law abiding, by living in peace and unity to sustain the tempo.

"In a football competition, one language is always heard, it's a 'goal.' As we aspire to score a goal in every competition in life, we should unite our voices by speaking one language, to score a greater goal for the benefit of our community. Let's shun crisis, unnecessary sentiments by preaching peace, love and unity among ourselves.

"We are going to embark on constituency football tournament. I decided to start with my village, this is a mini-football tournament for the youths of Nduogbu. It is called Nduogbu Unity Cup Championship. I believe this is one of the best ways to unite our people; not only to bring unity in our community but to select and encourage those who are talented in footballing for a greater training and empowerment in the football world," he said.

The community stakeholders, Chief John Nkwuda and the Nduogbu Ndueze Village Head, Chief Vincent Nwigube, commended the lawmaker and all the players who participated in the football championship.

The stakeholders said, the financial support and donation of the trophy to community by Chief Nwegede contributed lots for the success of the tournament.

They said all the four zones of Nduogbu Ndueze Village were fully engaged in the exercise, and however, charged different football teams within the area to go back and prepare ahead of greater tournament for the community and constituency at large.

The National Youth President of Nduogbu Ndueze Village, Mr Innocent Aliugo also thanked the lawmaker and other stakeholders in the area, whom he said, have been contributing for the peace, unity and progress of the community.

Meanwhile, the football competition was later won by Nduogbu Ndueze zone 'A' with one goal whereas zone 'B', came second, and the players were handsomely appreciated financially by the lawmaker.
