PDP accuses Police of fueling party crisis in Ebonyi

By Solomon Okemini

Supporters of Chief Fred Udogu's led Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi on Monday accused men of Nigeria Police Force of having played on the script that fuels the party crisis in the state.

The Ebonyi PDP Publicity Secretary, Barr. Silas Joseph Onu in a press release accused the mobile policemen of acting on the order of Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi by working against the PDP faithfuls in the state.

The release alleged that Police denied the PDP members, an access to the party secretariat by the members following the order of Nwebonyi who was removed as their Chairman.

NATIONAL PANEL gathered that PDP  Secretariat blocked by police is along Abakaliki-Enugu expressway and some PDP members were arrested today.

It could be recalled that the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had issued order banning Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi from parading himself as the Ebonyi State PDP Chairman.

The release read in parts: "Today, we are deeply saddened to report that the lives of Ebonyi people is no longer valuable to those madated to protect them.

“Upon a valid Court order which restrained Nwebonyi and his urchins from parading themselves as leaders or even members of the People’s Democratic Party, we duly notified the police of our intention to access our Secretariat today.

“Upon arrival, the police were obviously ordered to frustrate that effort and they swung into action. Firstly,  the Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Operations asked that we go and obtained a “Enforcement Order” as if the case is one requiring further order (s) to give validity to the initial order – this is laughable!

“The Police came and began to arrest our members on a spurious claim that the already vandalised Secretariat is now being vandalised today (scripted cover up for Nwebonyi). Later today, Mr. Nwebonyi will hold a press conference alleging this falsehood as a cover up for his criminal act of wilful vandalism and stealing of PDP properties. We have made this complaint a long time ago, but the Police has either refused, neglected or failed to even open any investigation.

“It is very interesting how the police is now being used to play out a script that promotes disorder and fuels crisis in Ebonyi State.

“If the Ebonyi Police Command is no longer the Nigerian Police, it will be good for us to be notified as we can no longer trust a public institution that is clearly working to create division, crisis and disorder through the overt act of subverting a valid court order and encouraging a renegade to cover his crimes. Watch out for Nwebonyi’s press briefing later today.

“Now, we are only left with the option of pleading with the DSS to do the needful and restore Order in Ebonyi State as this little spark is not a healthy sign. It may appear innocuous, but only God knows how such senseless attack end. The lives of may people is a stake here.
“This is no longer politics, but a deliberate effort to throw the entire Ebonyi into full scale crisis. As we write this Press release, there has been a sustained gunshots around the PDP Secretariat for over an hour and it is unclear who is responsible as the Akubaraoha Youth Assembly and Policemen have literally cordoned off the vicinity.

“Our Youth Leader, Barr. Obinna Iteshi was arrested by police for no other reason but that he was wearing a PDP cloth. This is unnecessary. Has the policr become a private security agency for the Governor and his cohorts to use as they desire?

“We are calling on the Police to immediately change their way and return to the path of honour by standing with the people  – Governors come and go, but the people remain.

"The state party publicity Secretary appealed to their members to remain law abiding, and not be lure into activity that would cause more commotion in the state.

"He, however, charged men of Nigeria Police Force in Ebonyi State to ensure that law and order are enforced diligently as contained in the court order as anything short of that would amount to playing on double standard and a clear call for disorder."

Our correspondent is yet to hear from Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi and his supporters in the state.
