Group in Ebonyi seeks mobility support to improve nutrition at grassroot

 



Mrs Ihuoma Chukwuemeka, Head of Department, Nutrition and Dietetics at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AEFUTHA), Abakaliki, has called for increased support of nutrition awareness. for mobilization . 

Ihuoma also a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist, said that provision of mobility would enable dietitians take nutrition to the grassroots. 


Chukwuemeka made the call on Wednesday, in Abakaliki during an event to mark the 2021 World Dietitian Day. 


The day with theme: "Personalise Your Plate," is an annual celebration of the dedication of RDNs as leading advocates for advancing  nutritional status of people around the world. 


She described a dietitian as a clinical nutrition specialist and authority in the health care team. 


"We pray management to include dietitians in rural postings to increase nutrition awareness and reduce the prevalence of malnutrition in the state. 


"People at the remote areas of the state do not know much about nutrition and this is where we have most of nutrition related problems, " Chukwuemeka said. 


She commended the hospital management for supports and committement towards the event. 


She called on physicians, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, other professionals colleagues and the general public to take advantage of the ongoing medical nutrition therapy. 


Another, Dietitian Nutritionist, Mrs Lynda Okpara encouraged people to develop healthful eating habits by making good food choice and physical activity habits for healthy living. 


The Chairperson, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Ebonyi Chapter, Mrs Nwabumma Asouzu, described nutrition awareness as crucial to healthy living, urging them to stick to local meals. 


 


The agency reports that the event featured, screening assessment, nutrition counseling education, food exhibition, lectures on sources of protein, vitamins among other exercise.
