The National Association of Nigerian Traditional Medicine Practitioners, NANTMP in Ebonyi State has applauded Governor David Umahi on his recent order mandating all native doctors and traditional medicine dealers to register with government in the state as a part of security measures nowadays.
Umahi on Wednesday in Abakaliki gave a compulsory order for the registration of all the traditional medicine dealers with government within seven days.
The governor directed the commissioners of the state ministries of Health and Internal Security to work with Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Garba to perfect the exercise.
But in interaction with NATIONAL PANEL on Thursday, the traditional medicine dealers in the state described the governor's order as a welcome development.
According to the immediate past Coordinator of the Association in the state, Rev. Dr Samuel Ezenyi, "the directive from Governor David Umahi is a wise decision", pointing that, the process would introduce a genuine practice in the system.
Rev Ezenyi described the governor as a visionary leader who has determined to transform all the systems in the state including the trado-medical world.
He noted that Umahi in his magnanimity welcomed the members of NANTMP under his watch during the New year celebration, promised to donate land where trado-medical school would be built for them to advance their God gifted careers.
He urged all the traditional medicine dealers in the state to abide by the governor's order and ensure full compliance by registering within the stipulated time to avoid attracting sanction.
Ezenyi condemned the antics of some acclaimed native doctors who have turned witchs and wizards, saying the association of trado-medical doctors would not welcome such people as their members.
"Our members are not encouraging witch-hunting, witch- crafting or attacking people in the name of being an odi-eshi doctors, which have encouraged many youths to join different criminal groups and partook in evil activities, unleashing mayhems on individuals, groups and society at large. This is quite unfortunate.
"As a man of God gifted by God to heal people with herbs and roots, I know many of our members who have utilized their gifts very well to heal people suffering different ailments without delay.
"But you see those witch-crafting native doctors, they hardly identify themselves with us, buy our association's plans, programmes or even attempt to partner with government to advance our careers for the benefit of the society. I think our governor has taken the best decision.
"Let us come out massively and register with the government, by so doing, people will know what particular sickness or health challenges you will cure as a native doctor or herbalist. It is a welcomed development," he said.
