2021 Children's Day: Ebonyi first lady calls parents to prioritize on children's welfares

 *Condemns FGM practice, other vices

As the Nation observes this years Children's Day celebration, the Wife of the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State Chief (Mrs) Rachel Umahi has called on parents to persistently give an adequate attention on the welfare of their children for proper upbringing and condemned the practice of female genital mutilation in some parts of the country.


This was contained in a statement endorsed and made available to newsmen in Abakaliki by her Chief Press Secretary,  Mr Donatus Owo in Abakalki.


The statement said that the Governors wife had joined millions of people of goodwill to celebrate Ebonyi children and indeed children across the globe. 


It further said that Children's day celebration  is usually an opportunity for introspection to assess and possibly update the responsibilities of parents and leaders to the young ones.


Recalled that there have  been turbulent, characterized by hyper challenges of COVID-19 pandemic; the End- SARS crises and heightened insecurity in the past months across the  country, adding that the  atrocious situation seems to deem the modest achievements of government and partners to give a sound and prosperous future for  children. 


The statement decried the unfortunate reports of insecurity, rape, mindless abduction of school children, secret practice of female genital mutilation, child labour and other forms of violence against children and called on perpetrators of such dastardly act to desist from it  or face wrath of government. 


However, the statement added that the observance of Children’s Day should not only be instructive, but should stir a fertile opportunity to upgrade the needs of children and prioritized their welfare, especially the issues of safety, education, entrepreneurship, justice, equity, stressing that  quality future for children should be given a pontifical place of honour in policies and programmes.

 The statement hinted  that law enforcement agencies should consciously identify common places where children are found and provide them with adequate security in this era of insecurities while urging parents and care givers  to be vigilant and show extra-ordinary commitment on matters concerning their children and wards as they are  future leaders, wishing them well in their future endeavors as well as assuring the children's her avowed commitment to keep intervening for them by setting agenda that would  create prosperity and a life changing future for them at all times.
