Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, has promised to install more street lights in Umuahia as well as schools in the Abia State capital.
Abia State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Orji made the promise while presenting his mid-term scorecard to his constituents of Umuahia Central State Constituency during a meeting attended by prominent politicians of Ibeku extraction.
Rt. Hon. Orji told his constituents that solar-powered streetlights which he received from the governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, would soon be installed in different schools in the constituency to enhance their security, especially at night, while more streetlights would be installed in Umuahia metropolis.
The Speaker also assured his people that the seven mini-stadia he was constructing in his constituency and beyond, as well as all other projects he was executing would reach 70 per cent completion by December this year.
The Speaker enumerated the projects, both the ones he personally embarked upon and those he attracted from the Executive Arm, to include potable water projects and various school projects comprising reroofing, fencing, re-grassing, building of classroom blocks, provision of water boreholes, furniture, toilet facilities, among others; donation of electricity transformers to several communities and award of scholarships.
Other spheres of intervention by the Abia Number One lawmaker are youth empowerment through training of about 200 youths in ICT; presentation of empowerment items such as cars, tricycles, start up capitals to youths and artisans, as well as construction and reconstruction of roads in Amuzukwu, Ugba, Afaraukwu, among other communities and building, rehabilitation and /or equipping of health centres in various wards in the constituency.
He assured his constituents that he would continue with his quality representation, even in projects delivery.
“When I started my water projects across communities few years ago, some doubted our commitment and thought the projects were mere political tools and would not stand the test of time.
“But to the glory of God, the projects are still very functional today in all the communities,” he said.
“One of the main reasons I called this meeting is to hear from you all; to know the areas we are doing well and the areas we need to improve upon as no man can claim to know it all.
“In whatever area you feel I need to improve, kindly feel very free to tell me. I am ready to take your advice and see how I can implement your suggestions as possibly as I can because democracy is all about the people,” he told the gathering.
In their separate remarks, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Abia State and Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Chief Charles Ogbonnaya, the Traditional Prime Minister of Ibeku Ancient Kingdom, Chief Uchenna Akwukwaegbu (Bawas), among others, commended the Speaker for his exemplary leadership which have helped to keep the Abia State House of Assembly effective and peaceful, despite being peopled by members of different political parties.
They also commended the Speaker for the numerous projects he has attracted to the constituency and even beyond, describing his scorecard as “the incontrovertible evidence of dividends of democracy to the people.”
They, however, requested him to do more, saying, “like Oliver Twist, we cannot stop asking for more.”
