Ebonyi State Government on Tuesday in an unscheduled visit to schools across the state, slammed some principals at the junior sections of the secondary education level.

One of the principal of the Junior Secondary School, Nnodo, Mrs. Ann Okafor with one-month working suspension without pay while her counterpart of Junior Secondary School, Izzi High School, Mrs. Okereke Angelina bagged two months suspension without pay, due to truancy and other unprofessional conducts perpetrated by them.

The Secretary to the State Government and Coordinating Commissioner, Dr. Ugbala Kenneth Igwe, made this known during a joint inspection tour with members of Secondary Education Board, SEB and Universal Basic Education Board, UBEB.

Dr. Ugbala directed that Mr. Monday Ogbu should serve two months suspension without salary while Mrs. Vivian Eluu was directed to take over as the Acting Principal, Junior Secondary School, Izzi High School in Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state.

In the same vein, all the teachers from Nnodo Secondary School and other schools visited who were late to  the school are to be queried while the principal of the Senior Secondary School Nnodo, Mr. Jacob Eze, was directed to be transferred to another school.

Accordingly, some of the students who were late to school were also given corporal punishment to serve as deterrent to others.

The Secretary to the State Government maintained that the decision became necessary because of the level of decay in the schools across the state but however, commended employees who are committed to their work.

He stressed that Ebonyi State Government would do her best to revamp the education sector using a pragmatic approach for quick fix.

He further attributed the decay in the sector to negligence and stagnation, stressing that there was no justification for a teacher or principal to be absent from school without proper communication as to his/her where about.

According to him, “teachers should communicate to heads of departments, principals and vice principals as the case may be if they have any cause to be absent from school by signing the movement register with clear description of their where about.

“His Excellency, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi, has declared state of emergency on supervision and monitoring of our schools. Principal Officers of Government have been drafted to move around schools to monitor what is happening in our schools.

“Therefore, as a Government, we will not condone indolence, and will sanction insincere and lazy workers who do not justify their monthly remunerations.

"Nobody can build society as teachers do, so teachers should see themselves as foster parents, educators and role models. Our administration has done well by paying teachers as and when due. So, I do not see the need why you will not come to school and teach. Any teacher who is not ready to perform his/her statutory duty should give way for others who are willing and unemployed”.

The school morning assembly which started around 7.30am and ended 8.00am prompt at Nnodo, Secondary School witnessed in attendance a total number of 51 out 92 teaching and non-teaching staff of the school.
