Floating Ebonyi football clubs, my major priority - Sports Commissioner



The newly re-appointed Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports,
Charles Akpuenika, has said that floating the state’s male and female football clubs remains his major priority.


Akpuenika who had been in the ministry’s saddle since 2015, disclosed this in an interview, noting that football followers in the state have yearned for the state football teams for long.

“We would sustain various competition aimed at discovering talents to fortify the team which represent the state in major competitions.

“The King David champions cup will soon commence across the 64 Local Government Area-Development Centres while the Queen Rachel female version will also commence across the 13 councils of the state,” he said.

He noted that the ministry was negotiating with the Nigerian Football Federation over a slot for the proposed teams in the 2022/23 football season.

“The state must definitely be represented either in the first or second division of the national league.

“The state has one of the best stadiums in the country and we want to bring top football actions to fans in the state”.

Akpuenika said that the ministry would also sustain all government’s empowerment programmer for the youths to make them self-reliant and shun crime.

“We would intensify our enlightenment of the youths to shun crime but engage in various sporting and other productive ventures.

“They should also protect public facilities because most of the infrastructure constructed by the governor cannot be found in other states,”

He thanked the governor for the re-appointment, pledging to re-double his efforts in enhancing the state’s sports and youth development sector.

“I urge other state governments to emulate the governor in appointing non-indigenes into various strategic positions.

“This gives non-indigenes, a feeling of oneness and promote unity which the nation utmostly desires presently."
