In line with the directives of the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, the people of Abakaliki Local Government Council, have officially received a team of National Population Commission (NPC) for Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercise, aimed at capturing or delineating all the geographical areas into manageable units for the forthcoming census in Nigeria.
While receiving the team led by the Honourable Federal Commissioner of the NPC in Ebonyi State, Hon. Darlington Okereke, the Executive Chairman Abakaliki L.G.A, Hon. Emmanuel Nwangele, promised to take the exercise very serious, by giving the enumerators all the needed support in order to ensure that all the nooks and cranny of Abakaliki Local Government Area is duly captured.
Hon. Nwangele who stressed the need for the enumeration exercise, also commended the efforts of the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi in making sure that the actual population of Ebonyi residents is registered in the forthcoming census in Nigeria.
In his remarks, the Federal Commissioner of the NPC, Hon. Darlington Okereke, thanked the Council Chairman and the entire people of the Area for their hospitality and warmth reception, and promised to work hard, while soliciting the support of the host communities, so as to achieve the aims and objectives of the enumeration exercise, adding that the field officers have been fully prepared for the assignment.
In her remarks, the Director NPC, Ebonyi State, Barr. Mrs. Julia Mmanyike, pointed out that the enumeration exercise would help in correcting all the anomalies of the past census in Nigeria, as it would solve the problem of under registered population as complained in some quarters.
Barr. Mmanyike noted that the loopholes observed in 2006 census was as a result of lack of knowledge of its importance, adding that population is one of the determining factors in societal development, including allocation of resources, INEC registration areas, schools, hospitals, health facilities, among others, and stressed that all hands must be on deck to achieve a desired result.
Also speaking, the Quality Assurance Officer of the NPC, Mrs. Felicia Mwolpun, said that apart from the field enumerators, that they also have supervisors whose job is to ensure that all the necessary things are done so as not to compromise the quality of the exercise.
In his vote of thanks, the Coordinator Ekumenyi Development Centre, Hon. Ebere Nwogba, appreciated the NPC team, and also promised to give them unflinching support in order to ensure that Abakaliki Local Government Council achieves optimum success in the EAD exercise.
The official reception of the NPC enumeration team was done by the Executive Chairman of the Council, alongside his VC, the traditional rulers, DC Coordinators, Ward Councillors, Supervisors, Community Leaders and other Stakeholders of Abakaliki Local Government Area.
