COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ), EBONYI STATE COUNCIL AFTER A STATE CONGRESS ON AUGUST 18, 2021
1. The Congress after extensive deliberations on the state of affairs of its members recognised the efforts, commitment and contributions of its members in national development and social engineering, especially in Ebonyi State. Congress equally called on members to practice with the full tenets and ethics of the journalistic profession and warned quacks and social media ranters to desist from infiltrating into the profession with their unethical tendencies.
2. Congress with deep sense of great loss commiserated with the State Governor, Dr. David Nweze Umahi, the APC family in Ebonyi State as well as the Elem family over the death of its member who is also the APC Youth Leader in Ebonyi State, Comrade Ogochukwu David Elem who died in a fatal motor accident on 15th August, 2021.
Congress recognised the contributions of late Ogochukwu Elem as a devout member of NUJ and a fine breed reporter in the state media house before his appointment as Senior Legislative Aide to a federal law maker from Ebonyi State and subsequent emergence as State APC Youths Leader.
3. Congress while thanking Ebonyi State Governor, Chief David Umahi for his proactive response in recovery the bodies of the accident victims which Ogochukwu Elem was involved also used the medium to appreciate him once again for his monumental achievements exemplified in supersonic and gigantic infrastructures completed and ongoing in different parts of the state. Congress further implored him never to relent in moving Ebonyi State to an enviable height and pledged its continuous readiness to continue to collaborate with the state government through qualitative and developmental media reportage.
4. Congress after critical review of the state of affairs and activities of the Deacon Chris Iziguzo led National Executive of NUJ whose tenure is due to elapse in no distant time. The Union therefore unanimously called on him to stand for re-election as the National President of NUJ and adopted him as its sole candidate.
5. Congress reviewed the state of affairs of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) which is surrounded with some issues and resolved to follow the NUJ National Executive directive that SWAN members who disassociate selves from NUJ should stop enjoying its privileges and using its facilities. On this grounds, Congress upheld the Comrade Edward Nnachi led executive of SWAN in Ebonyi State and enjoined Comrade Emmanuel Nnaji led factional executive to collapse into the Edward Nnachi led executive or forfeit the privileges, coverages and benefits whatsoever from Ebonyi State Council of NUJ and nationally.
6. Congress also received reports of the operation of Independent Media Practitioners Association operating in the state and advised that real journalists amongst them should belong to chapels in the state to enable them have the coverage to operate as journalists. Congress also revisited some provisions of the NUJ Constitution wherein it was found that they have no provisional backing to operate as journalists on any other name whatsoever except on the platforms recognised by NUJ as vividly captured by its constitution.
7. Congress further reviewed the security situations in the state and thanked the state government under the leadership of Chief David Umahi for his efforts in reducing insecurity in the state and equally called on him to look more into the welfare and security of journalists practising in the state.
