Ahead of the 2023 General Elections in the Country, the Executive Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Nnajiofor Ibiam, has challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to ensure free,fair and credible outcome of the elections in the Area.
Hon. Uche Ibiam stated this on Friday during the LGA Stakeholders meeting on INEC Preparedness for 2023 General Elections,where he called on relevant stakeholders to synergize with the Electoral umpire for the smooth conduct of the General Elections and advised Party members, Candidates and their supporters to play by the rules of the game for a credible exercise.
The Council Boss who was represented at the event by the Co-ordinator of Amasiri Development Centre,Hon. Baron Ogbonnia Enya, charged political actors to eschew campaign of calumny and I-must-Win mentality that would overheat the polity but should rather concentrate on issue-based campaign.
The INEC Electoral Officer , in Afikpo North Local Government Area, Mr. Onyemachi Agu disclosed that the gathering became necessary as the general elections draw closer and the need for stakeholders to be properly informed on the level of preparedness of INEC and established that the Commission embarked on so many pre-elections activities starting from monitoring of party Congresses,Party primaries, Continuous voter registration exercise,CVR and attributed the huge successes recorded to the collaboration of Stakeholders.
The E.O who emphasized on violent free electioneering processes, further called on those who have not collected their PVC of 2019 and 2021 to do so, to be eligible to exercise their franchise as every vote must count.
In a remark,the Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly,Rt. Hon Kingsley Ogbonnia Ikoro who commended INEC for their level of preparedness urged all Candidates in the forth coming General Elections and their supporters to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.
Speaking on behalf of Security Agencies,the Area Commander, Nigeria Police, Afikpo Area,AC Stanley Egbo, reaffirmed the preparedness of Security Operatives to secure lives and protect everyone participating in the elections.
Others who spoke including HRH Ezeogo Engr/Arc Ewa Elechi; Hon. Oko Okoche of APC; Hon. Patrick Ogbu Egwurochi of PDP; Hon. Iheukwumere Okogwu Otu of APGA and Ogbonnia Ibe of Labour Party all called for a level playing field for all candidates and voters in the forth coming elections.
The meeting was heavily attended by Traditional Rulers, Security Agencies, Town Union Presidents; Community Leaders; Party Leaders; Candidates and their Supporters; Civil Society Organization and the Press.
