In strict obedience to their parliamentary duties, members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government visited Afikpo Local Government Area on Oversight Function.
The visit which took place on Thursday, 6th April, 2023, saw the Executive Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, Hon. Uche Nnajiofor Ibiam on hand to receive on arrival the Honourable Members at the Afikpo Local Government Headquarters at about 1:23pm. Other principal officers at the reception of the parliamentarians were; Vice Chairman of the LGA, Hon(Mrs) Josephine Chinwe Nwogo, Leader of the Council, Hon. Egwu Abagha, Councilors; Supervisors, etc.
Speaking on the visit, the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government, Rt. Hon. Chief Anthony Nwegede enjoined operators of the Local Government system in Ebonyi State to always evolve strategic plans that would fast track grassroots' progress and development even as he explained that the visit became necessary as the House needs to be abreast with happenings in the Local Government System, especially on utilization of public funds to execute projects that have direct impact on the people at the grassroots.
Rt. Hon. Nwegede equally applauded the Executive Chairman of Afikpo LGA for the projects he has put in place within 7 months of his administration and charged him to remain undistracted in the discharge of his duties to better the lot of his people.
Some of the members of the Committee who also spoke included; Hon. Victor Chukwu, Hon. Chinedu Onah, Barr. Friday Uhuo and Hon. Lilian Chinwe Nwachukwu. They stated that their visit was aimed at strengthening the Local Government System to be functionally effective in service delivery more than ever before. They equally enjoined Council Officials to always ensure that all council expenditures were in tandem with fiscal discipline and financial best practices anchored on rules and regulations at all times so that they won't be found wanting.
Briefing the Honourable Members of the House on his stewardship, the Council Chairman, Hon Uche Ibiam explained that his administration has executed so many people oriented projects which include; grading/Lateriting of Roads across the 12 Wards in the Area, installation of solar lights from Afikpo to Amasiri, purchase of brand new vehicles for the Vice Chairman and the 12 Councilors; payment of Severance Allowances to former Council Officials, empowerment of numerous youths, women and widows in the Area, purchase of motor bikes for the youths of the Area, payment of hospital bills to indigents, payment of WAEC & NECO registration fees for some SS3 students, payment of school fees for indigent students in tertiary Institutions and other numerous scholarship schemes with more projects still on-going.
Speaking on behalf of the members of Afikpo Legislative Council, Leader of the Council, Hon. Abagha described the Council Chairman, Hon. Ibiam as a pragmatic leader who is committed to the development of the Council Area, adding that Councilors, Supervisors, Stakeholders, Staff of the Council and indeed the entire good people of Afikpo LGA are enjoying his leadership prowess as manifested in; harmonious working relationship with political officeholders and civil servants of the council as well as the promotion of the greatest happiness of Afikpo people through the execution of projects that have direct bearing on the needs of the grassroot even as he affirmed the executed projects earlier enumerated by the Executive Chairman.
The House Committee members expressed general satisfaction with the performance of the Afikpo Council Boss and implored him not to rest on his oars.
Other members of the Committee who were in attendance included; Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa, Hon. Joseph Ununu; Hon Nkemka Okoro Onuma and Hon. Benjamin Ezeoma.
