The Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, has advocated for creation of a new Dioceses in the state, calling on the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to expedite action towards that direction in order to correct the existing imbalance.
He emphasized that the creation of a new Diocese will bring the church closer to the people, citing the long distances priests currently have to travel for pastoral visits.
Bishop Chukwu pointed out that since its creation in 1973, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki has given rise to numerous parishes and is now due for the creation of a new Diocese.
Most Rev. Dr. Peter Chukwu stated this during the golden jubilee celebration of the Creation of Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki at St. Theresa Cathedral, Abakaliki.
Bishop Chukwu also revealed the plans of the Dioceses to embark on significant developments, including the establishment of a Catholic University, hospitals, a School of Nursing, and more, according to Bishop Nworie.
Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu emphasized that the primary aim is to provide quality Education for young people, thereby curbing cultism and addressing social issues prevalent in society.
According to him, the Abakaliki Diocese is also preparing to create a School of Midwifery, Bishop Michael Okoro School of Health Care Technology, and convert its existing Nursing school into a college of Nursing that will confer HND qualifications.
Speaking during the event marking the grand finale of the Golden jubilee celebration Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru expressed joy at the growth of the Diocese and encouraged priests to represent the image of the Diocese positively. The event was attended by various Catholic Archbishops, Bishops, Governor Francis Nwifuru, former Governor Martin Elechi, and other leaders within and outside the state.
