The Special Assistant to the Governor on street light, Mr
Sylvester Nwamini said, the state Governor, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru have approved the use of solar system to power the street lights across the state.
Nwamini, disclosed this to newsmen in Abakaliki, during an interaction. He decried the nefrious activities of vandals which he said, was responsible for the black out in most parts of state, but revealed that Government have revived most of the places that were vandalized by the hoodlums and they are now back on track.
"When we office in June this year, we discovered that so many areas were in total back out. For example, from Onuebonyi to Vanco, the cables were totally vandalized by the hoodlums. Then in Onwe road, the street light was not working. From Ishieke junction to PDP Secretariat, the story was the same. Ezzamgbo was already closed. When I met the SA on security, he said, the vandal Killed two of his men there at Ezzamgbo.
"I recommended to Government that the street lights should be changed to solar system and I want to tell you that the for solar street light from Onuebonyi to Ezzamgbo has been awarded and by January the places will changed to solar. Onwe road has been revived. Udensi that was in total darkness has also been revived. From Onuebonyi, rice mill to Vanco to presco has been revived. International market to onuebonyi have been received too. Nkaliki area which was in total darkness have been received also. We have done maintenance on Odunukwe. The problem of Odunukwe was vandalization, which they did recently. I even mounted my boys and we slept three days because, they brought out the cable without taking it, may be at the point of vandalizing the cable, they saw people and ran away, so we said we are not going to remove the cable, we slept there for three days days waiting for them to come, the third day, they came and on sighting us they abandoned their digger and everything and ran away. But as it stands now, we are working on it and will be back before weekend.
"The major problem we are facing is vandalization but we're working security to checkmate that pending when we will completely change to solar powered light because that is what we want to do now.
"Government have accepted to change all the street lights to solar.
I want to tell you that Government is prepared to lighten up other parts of state with solar powered street lights. We just finished one recently at Afikpo beach and I tell you, Government is working seriously to see that all parts of the state is electrified. Government have seen that people are happy with it and that is what the people want bec ause the Government come on the mantra of people's charter of needs. Once the people have indicated interested on what they want, government have no option than to do it.
"I want to tell Ebonyians that there will constant light as far as street light is concerned throughout the Christmas period and beyond. As for those areas we are having challenges, we are going to rectify them and give security matching order to secure them", he concluded..
