Gov Nwifuru's Wife Flags Off Free Screening Of Hepatitis, Tuberculosis In Ebonyi

The Wife of Ebonyi State Governor Chief (Mrs) Mary Maudline Nwifuru has flagged off free screening and awareness campaign of hepatitis B and tuberculosis across all the Communities in the thirteen Local Government Areas of the State. 



The Governor's wife who flagged off the exercise during the grand finale of 2024 women August meeting at Iboko, headquarters of Izzi Local Government Area, noted that the screening and awareness campaign exercise would  not only provide people of the State the knowledge they need to protect themselves and their loved ones against the deadly diseases but also ensure that those affected receive the care and support they deserved.



Mrs Nwifuru described hepatitis B and tuberculosis as an endemic diseases that affects the liver and lungs and could lead to serious health complications if not detected and treated early, adding that the diseases have posed serious threat to the society due to lack of awareness and access to medical services. 



She noted that her pet project BERWO will continue to improve the health status of Ebonyi people. 



Mrs Nwifuru who is stop TB champion in Ebonyi State urged Chairpersons of the thirteen local government areas to join her in the fight against the diseases by  participating in the screening, spreading the world about Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B and encouraged their family members and friends to do the same for the good of the State. 



She appreciated her darling husband, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his support to the women of Ebonyi state and however called on the women of the State to build their homes in a way everybody would be  valued, supported and encouraged to reach their full potentials. 
 

On his part, the State commissioner for health Dr. Ekuma Moses commended Governor Nwifuru and his wife for their giant efforts in improving the health indices of Ebonyi people, saying that hepatitis B and tuberculosis are dangerous diseases that could cause so many death if not checkmated. 

The commissioner noted that team of health workers would be visiting all the Communities across the thirteen LGA's in the State to carry out screening and awareness campaign against the diseases and anybody tested positive  would be vaccinated to curtail the menace in the State. 

Similarly, the special assistant to the Governor on primary health Dr. Nwibo Sabinus described hepatitis B and tuberculosis as viral and most dangerous diseases that affect both old and young people in the society. 

Dr. Nwibo revealed that research conducted recently at AEFUTHA showed that the diseases are more common at Ikwo and Izzi local government areas in the State and extolled Governor Nwifuru and his Wife for their approval to embark on screening and awareness campaign against the menace across the State while urging Ebonyi people to utilize the golden opportunity as the exercises would be carried out at various communities simultaneously. 

He further expressed the readiness of the State Government to establish hepatitis research centre in the State where those that would test positive  be treated while those that may test negative would also be vaccinated so as to be protected against the disease.  

Earlier, the chairman of Izzi LGA Barr. Emenike Nwamkpa commended their excellecies for their people oriented leadership especially in the health sector in the State and prayed God  to bless them with long life, good health and prosperity. 


The State commissioner for aviation and transport technology Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu charged women to be an advocate of good home  builder not a destroyer and massively participate in the hepatitis screening and tuberculosis awareness campaign in the State. 




The Coordinator of Igbegu Development Centre Hon. Obinna Nwedu encouraged Ebonyi people to participate actively in the screening and awareness campaign and assured of his total support towards eradicating the deadly diseases in the State.  



Highlights of the event were distribution of twenty five motorcycles to TB awareness campaign coordinators and lecture on the effect of drug abuse among others.
