Nwifuru, Umahi Donates 199M For Completion Of Church Project Started By Late Ogbonnaya Onu Over 30yrs Ago

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru  has made a donation of 100 million naira for the completion of the home church of the late Dr . Christopher Ogbonnia Onu,Christ the King Catholic Church, Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state, which the Late Onu started, over 30 years ago when he was the Governor of Abia state.

Similarly, the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State and current minister of works, Engr David Umahi also made a donation of 99milion Naira, which said was a contribution of all sons of Uburu towards the Completion of the same Church building.

These  pronouncements were made during a funeral mass held in honor of Dr. Onu at Christ The King Catholic Church, Uburu, Ohazara local government Area of Ebonyi state.


Governor Nwifuru  noted that his donation reflects on the commitment to honor the legacy of the late statesman and supporting the community in their time of mourning, adding that the  completion of Dr. Onu's home church holds significant importance for both the local community and the family of the deceased.

The donation of the two leaders  were expected to provide crucial support for the Completion of the 31yrs old church building ensuring that it stands as a lasting tribute to the late Dr. Ogbonnia Onu. The gesture underscores the governor's dedication to preserving the memory and legacy of a respected figure in the community.


Dr  Onu who also served as Minister of Science and Technology  died on 14th of April this year 

In a tribute,  Governor  Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru described the death of late Dr Ogbonnaya Christopher Onu as a big loss to  the state. 

He said  late Dr. Onu when he was Governor led with vision and a tireless energy.


"Under his guidance, our roads were modernized, schools were built, and our healthcare system saw advancements that impacted thousands of lives. 

"His vision wasn’t limited to his tenure; he dreamed of a future where this state would be a beacon of excellence and prosperity. 


"Today, as we reflect on his achievements, we see that his dream is still alive and growing.


"As a Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Onu took that same spirit to the national level, advocating for our region and pushing forward policies that uplifted communities across the country" 


According  to Governor Nwifuru, late Dr Onu was instrumental in fostering relationships that brought development and innovation to the  people. 


"He wore the mantle of leadership with dignity, advocating tirelessly for our rights, and standing as a pillar of support for those in need.


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was represented by the Minister of Works Sen. David  Nweze Umahi said the late former minister was a true progressive, quintessential politician.


"We must thank Dr. Onu among others for his critical work in the birth of our party and for what we have achieved thus far"

Interacting with journalists, the Labour party Presidential in 2023 General election Mr Peter Obi and the PDP gubernatorial candidate for 2023 election in Ebonyi State Mr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii said, the late Onu lived a life of Justice and equity, which according to them is not in practice in Nigeria of  today.
The funeral was attended by eminent personalities including the National Chairman of APC, Dr. Umar Ganduje,; Governor Alex Oti of Abia State and his Enugu State Counterpart, Dr. Peter Mba. Others were Deputy Governors of Anambra and Imo states,Former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Chibuike Amechi, Former Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Kelechi Igwe and Senator Uche Ekwunife among other notable leaders.
