In his efforts to promoting unity while minimizing youth restiveness,the member representing Abakaliki North Constituency in the Ebonyi state House of Assembly, Victor Nwoke has unveiled the 2025 Urban Unity Cup football competition.The football game according to him would be competed by traders and artisans in various markets across Abakaliki, Ebonyi capital city.
Unveiling the competition tagged" Defend FON Urban Unity cup", Hon. Nwoke said that the unity cup was a way to appreciates youths of the urban city for their massive support during his election in 2023 general elections when he was elected to represent Abakaliki North state constituency.
The House Committee Chairman on Youth Development and Sports also emphasize that the competition is targeted towards combating youths restiveness,drug abuse while harnessing the potentials of Ebonyi youth.
He noted that it's an alternative avenue to mobilize youths and other ages for massive support to Governor Francis Nwifuru's re-election in 2027 general elections following his outstanding leadership quality for people of the state especially among urban residents.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Richard Idike represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, comrade Hillary Obiesie commended the lawmaker for sponsoring such competition.
He described Sports as the a major means of empowering the youths and assured the partnership of the ministry for a successful competition.
Also, the leader of Ebonyi state House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro who argued that sports is unavoidable for any government that actually champion youths empowerment, commended his colleague, Nwoke for embarking on the Sports project and assured him of the House's support.
The House leader who also suggested that the competition should be an annual event as such game in the capital city involves people from every parts of the state and beyond, and noted that the impact is significant.
The Chairman of the Central Organizing committee and Special Assistant to Ebonyi state governor on Youth and Sports, Hon. Pius Nwankwo urged participating clubs involving traders and artisans from various markets in the capital city to exhibit spirit of sportsmanship during the competition and ensure their respective teams prepared well for the fiesta.
On his part, the Chairman of Abakaliki Motor Mechanic Site,Mr Fidelis Ukwa thank the lawmaker for re-awakening the spirit of sportsmanship among traders and artisans in the state and assured that the motor mechanic site would participate optimally hoping to win the trophy.
The highlight of the event is the official unveiling of the trophy and jersey of the participating teams.
