Ameze, Izzo Housing: Ebonyi Govt Arrests EXCO Members, One Other For Alleged Sabotage

By Celestine Okeh, Abakaliki

The Ebonyi State Executive Council (EXCO) Committee set up by Governor Francis Nwifuru to monitor the execution of Ameze and Izzo 140 Housing Units in Ishielu Local Government Area of the state, has commenced the arrest of Commissioners directly involved in suppervsing the contractors of the Housing project.

The chairman of the committee and Commissioner for border peace and conflict resolution, Dr Donatus Ilang, Tuesday morning led members of the committee which include, Hon. Valentine Okike, Commissioner Special Project, Hon. Ogbonna Okorie, Commissioner for Inter-party affairs, Hon. Mrs Okoha, SA on women mobilization, Ebonyi Central and Hon. Okum, SA on internal security, Ezza South Local Government Area, and team of security agencies to the houses of the affected State Executive Council members said, they were out to enforce the Governors directives and ensure that defaulting contractors are arrested and ensure they complete the project.

"As you have seen and know, our dear Governor the beacon of hope of peace, the man who loves to put smiles on the faces of the people have deemed it necessary to ensure that the war victims, specifically, Ezilo war victims, the Ameze and Izzo people are lifted to see the light of humanitarian activity and that's why he deemed it necessary to build befitting houses for them, surprisingly, most of these contractors have refused to complete the work and that's why His Excellency, our dear Governor constituted the EXCO Committee on supervision of Ameze and Izzo Housing units to ensure that there's compliance. The committee has discussed with contractors and have also given timeline to ensure they comply and return back to site and finish their work, but up till now, some of these contractors have refused and that was why we moved in today with security agents and our committee members to see that His Excellency's magnanimity towards completing that work is carried out and that's why we have visited some of the EXCO members in charge of the contractors who applied genuinely and  refused to complete the work. A contract of 140 Housing Units, we can attest to you that over 125  completed and people delaying their own, refusing to complete the project. This is a slap and also an act capable of jeopardizing the good gesture our dear Governor has made for the good people of Ebonyi State particularly, for the good people of Ameze and Izzo.

"We are using this medium to inform the public and contractors that the clamp down on the defaulting contractors will continue on daily bases until they complete the project, so that it will be Commissioned and handed over to the good people His Excellency meant this work for. From today, we're no longer calling anyone or begging, whatever personality you think you're or political portfolio, you're not more than the people His Excellency is building this houses for. I want to really thank His Excellency for this kind gesture, for remembering the war victims and reactivating their lives through the provision of shelter and it's regrettable that some people are sabotaging it. From today onwards, we  will ensure we arrest them anywhere we see them and do all we can, to ensure that law of humanity prevail, because once you're sabotaging the benefits others suppose to enjoy based on Government gestures and dividends of Democracy, it then means you're no more human", he concluded.
The affected Commissioners include Prof Amari Omaka (SAN), Commissioner for Tetiary Education, Hon. Victor Chukwu, Commissioner for the Environment and Hon. Uchenna Igwe, Commissioner for Local Government and chieftaincy matters. Others are Dr. Moses Ekuma, Commissioner for health, Hon. Ifeanyi Ogbuewu, Commissioner for Culture and tourism, Engr Felix Igboke, Commissioner for project monitoring and Engr. Timothy Nwachi, Executive chairman, Afikpo Local Government Area.

Those who were not present during the visit were however, issued with arrest letter from the State Police command.

Recall that the 140 Ameze and Izzo Housing Units was the first landmark project flagged off by Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifiru shortly after assuming office in 2023, but has not been fully completed till date due to the abandonment of the project by contractors.
