In a significant step towards improving water access and public health, Mrs. Peace Ifeoma Agwu, the Executive Chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, officially commissioned a borehole in Amuha village, Ezilo community, yesterday.
This initiative aims to alleviate the burden faced by women and children who previously had to sleep near the pond site to secure access to water.
Addressing the community during the commissioning ceremony, Agwu highlighted the hardships endured by the residents, particularly women and children, who risked their safety while trying to fetch water from the pond.
She noted, “It is disheartening that women and children had to spend nights at the pond site in Amuha village just to have access to water. This borehole will not only provide clean drinking water but also enhance the quality of life for the residents.”
Agwu also raised concerns about the health implications of using the pond water, which is shared with livestock and has reportedly led to the spread of waterborne diseases within the community. “The pond water, being contaminated and also used by cattle, has had dire health consequences for many in Amuha village. This borehole represents a proactive measure to protect the health of our people,” she said.
The newly commissioned borehole is expected to significantly reduce waterborne illnesses and provide a safer, more reliable source of drinking water for the people of Amuha and surrounding areas. The initiative underscores Agwu's commitment to enhancing public health and safety through sustainable community development projects.
Residents expressed their gratitude for the timely intervention, noting that access to clean water will improve their daily lives and reduce the burden on women and children who are often tasked with water collection. The commissioning of the borehole marks a hopeful turning point for the community as they look forward to improved health and wellbeing in the months and years to come.
